The school has been informed that one case of Tuberculosis (TB) in a person attending Holy Family Community School Rathcoole has been recently notified to the Department of Public Health Medicine HSE East. The Department of Public Health has stated that TB is not an easy disease to acquire and that a person needs prolonged close contact with an infectious case to be at risk of acquiring the disease. Household contacts of an infectious case are most at risk.
The Department of Public Health with the cooperation of the school have carried out a risk assessment to identify close contacts of the case and are offering screening. This is in accordance with the Guidelines on the Prevention of TB in Ireland 2010 which is available on www.hpsc.ie. The Department of Public Health will be in contact with these individuals to arrange screening. Those identified for screening should continue their daily activities as normal. The Department of Public Health will monitor the situation closely and may expand the contact tracing process at a later stage if necessary.
