At HFCS we believe it is very important for our students to be constantly improving their speaking, reading and writing skills. To aid this we have a number of initiatives to promote literacy including the following:
- A “book in the bag” policy – all students are asked to keep a book, comic or magazine in their bags that they can read if given the opportunity during the day.
- Book Bingo – first year students are given the opportunity to record what they read on a bingo sheet in order to win prizes.
- Key Words Lists – students are encouraged to record their new vocabulary in each subject in specific lists.
- Reading week – each year after the Christmas tests the school celebrates reading through wall displays, drop everything and read time, table quizzes, visits from writers, etc..
